# Can a Refrigerator Start a Fire? What Actually Causes It, and the Smell That Comes First

## Can a refrigerator start a fire? The honest answer

Yes, and rarely. Refrigerators are among the least likely appliances in a kitchen to start a fire, and they are not among the least likely to try — because unlike almost everything else in the room, they run continuously, for years, unattended.

What burns is electrical. Not the cold, and not the refrigerant.

## What is actually involved

**The start relay and capacitor.** They sit at the compressor and they switch every time it starts, which on a hot day is a great many times. A failing relay runs hot.

**The defrost heater circuit.** It is a heating element inside a cold cabinet, and its wiring and thermostat live in a damp environment by design.

**The control board.** Electronics that have been powered for a decade in a warm cabinet.

**The cord and the outlet.** Often overlooked, and the easiest thing on this list to check yourself.

## The smell that comes first

Almost every one of these announces itself. Days or weeks before anything dramatic, there is a smell:

- **Hot plastic or scorched electrical** — the classic, and unmistakable once noticed.- **Fish, from an appliance that has never been near fish** — overheating wire insulation. It is a real thing, it catches people out, and it is worth acting on the same day.- **Ozone or a sharp, sweetish smell** — arcing.

Any of those three from a refrigerator: switch it off **at the breaker**, not at the panel key. A refrigerator that is plugged in is never fully off, and the control is exactly where several of these begin.

## The check worth doing tonight

Pull the cabinet forward far enough to reach the plug, and **feel the plug and the outlet**. Warm is not normal. Discolored, melted or loose is a job for an electrician before it is a job for us.

While you are there, look at the condenser. A coated coil makes the compressor and its start components run hotter and longer than they were designed to, for years — which is the quiet mechanism behind a fair share of the electrical failures on this list.

In this climate that matters more than it does elsewhere. A cabinet in a kitchen that is 85°F during the day, with salt and dust on its coils, is asking its start components to work harder every single cycle. Quarterly cleaning is the manufacturer's own instruction and it is the cheapest insurance in the room.

## What is not the answer

Unplugging it and plugging it back in to see if the smell returns. If something has run hot enough to smell, it has already told you what you needed to know.
