# A Burning Smell From a Refrigerator: Which Ones Are Urgent

## A refrigerator burning smell, and three others: four meanings

**Hot plastic or scorched electrical.** Switch it off at the breaker. Something is running hot enough to degrade insulation, and the components that do this — the start relay at the compressor, the defrost circuit, the control board — are all live whether the cabinet is cooling or not.

**Fish, with no fish in the house.** The same thing, wearing a disguise. Overheating wire insulation smells fishy and it catches people out every time. Treat it exactly like the first one.

**Hot dust, from behind the kickplate.** Usually the condenser doing its job under a coating it should not have. Not dangerous. It is the appliance telling you the coils are overdue, and in this climate that message arrives more often than the manual expects.

**Chemical or sweetish, inside the cabinet.** Almost always plastic, food, or a liner that is still new. Refrigerant is close to odorless in a domestic cabinet and the charge is small.

## Why the breaker rather than the panel

A refrigerator that is plugged in is **never fully off**. The control stays live, and the control is where several of these begin. The on-off key on the panel stops it cooling; it does not stop it being powered.

## What to do while you decide

- Get the cabinet forward far enough to **feel the plug and the outlet**. Warm is not normal; discolored or loose is an electrician's job before it is ours.- Look for a **scorch mark** on the back panel or around the compressor.- Note whether the **breaker has been tripping** lately, even occasionally. That is the same story told a different way.- Move the food if it is going to be off for a while — but do that second, not first.

## The one that is not an emergency and still matters

Dust and salt on a condenser in a Miami kitchen make the compressor and its start components run hotter and longer than they were built for, for years. The hot-dust smell is the mildest possible warning about that, and cleaning the coils quarterly is the manufacturer's own instruction rather than an upsell.

Most of the genuinely electrical failures we see on refrigeration here trace back through that mechanism — not to a defect, but to a coil nobody ever looked at.
