# Induction not recognizing the pan

Symptom

# Viking induction not recognizing the pan

A zone that flashes, beeps or simply does nothing with a pan on it. Nine times out of ten this is the cookware, and a magnet settles it in five seconds without anybody being called.

## Book a diagnostic visit

Your model number and a line about what it is doing is enough to get started.

Your details stay private. No spam, ever.

Five ordinary causes

## What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

- Cookware that is not magnetic

Aluminum, copper, glass and much stainless. Induction moves a magnetic base and nothing else, and a set that was perfect on gas may be none of those things.

- A base too small for the zone

Published as its own condition on this equipment. Move it to a smaller ring, or use a pan that covers this one.

- A base that has warped

A pan that rocks does not couple properly. It is the pan rather than the top, and it is often an old favorite.

In five minutes

## Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

How it shows up

## What people describe when they call

- “The zone flashes with a pan in place”
- “It works with some pans and not others”
- “A smaller pan works and a larger one does not, or the reverse”
Two shortcuts

## Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem, and the model number says which parts to bring. Either one shortens the visit; both together usually settle it.

In more detail

## About Viking induction not recognizing the pan

### Five seconds and a magnet

Hold a fridge magnet against the base of the pan. If it does not stick firmly, induction cannot drive it — no cooktop can, and there is nothing wrong with yours. If it does stick, check the base covers the ring and sits flat.

### The page that exists to stop a visit

This is the most common induction call and the least often an actual repair. A cooktop that flashes at a pan is doing exactly what it was designed to do, and the test costs nothing. We would rather you found that out here than after paying for a visit.

### When it genuinely is the appliance

When a pan that is definitively magnetic, flat, and the right size works on one zone and not another. That is a detection circuit, it is on the appliance side, and it is worth booking.

## Questions about viking induction not recognizing the pan

Some stainless is magnetic and some is not, and only the magnetic kind works on induction. It is one of the most common surprises after switching from gas, and it is not a defect in the cooktop or in the pans.

Then check whether it is the same pan and the same zone. If both are the same, that moves the question from cookware to the appliance and it is worth a call.

There are interface discs, and they work after a fashion — slowly, and with less control than the cooktop is capable of. On equipment like this it is usually worth the pans rather than the workaround.
