Symptom
Viking filter or maintenance message showing
A filter button turned blue, a CL on the display, a bulb indicator or a condenser reminder. All of these are the appliance asking for maintenance rather than reporting a problem.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The water filter interval
Twelve months on the integrated cabinets after the last reset. Nothing is wrong with the appliance.
Appliance maintenance from $145 -
The condenser reminder
CL on a column, or CHECK COND. on an integrated cabinet at six months. It is the most useful reminder the appliance has.
Refrigerator cooling & defrost repair from $225 -
The Bluezone bulb indicator
A service item with an interval rather than a failure, shown as a thin blue strip along the bottom of the display.
Appliance maintenance from $145 -
A message that will not clear
Usually the reset step rather than the maintenance, and it is in the manual.
Diagnostic visit from $95 -
A reminder returning too quickly
Which is this city's water and this city's air rather than a malfunction, and it is a reason to shorten your own schedule.
Appliance maintenance from $145
In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Identify which message it is
Filter, condenser, bulb. Three different jobs and three different resets.
-
02
Do the maintenance first
Clearing a reminder without doing the work is the worst possible outcome, because the next reminder is a year away.
-
03
Use the correct reset
Each one is a specific key held for a specific time, and they differ between generations.
-
04
Note how quickly it returned
Faster than the interval means the water or the room, and it is worth knowing.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
Two shortcuts
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem, and the model number says which parts to bring. Either one shortens the visit; both together usually settle it.
If the display is showing something
Photograph it before it clears — codes do not wait. Search the full code list
If there is no code at all
The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About Viking filter or maintenance message showing
Do the thing, then clear the message
Each of these has a reset that is not automatic: the filter indicator goes out when the filter is changed, CL clears by holding the up and down arrows for three seconds, the bulb indicator by holding the refrigerator selector for three seconds, and the integrated cabinets by holding ENTER for five. Doing the job without the reset leaves the message on.
Good news on a display
Almost everything else in this archive is an appliance reporting a problem. These are appliances asking for routine care, on schedule, exactly as designed — and every one of them is an owner job with a reset the owner can do.
Why the intervals are short here
Hard water on the filter side and salt-laden air on the condenser side. Both shorten what the manual assumed, and both are the reason a reminder that returns early is information rather than a malfunction.

Questions about viking filter or maintenance message showing
Is CL an error code?
It is a request rather than an error: the display blinks CL when it is time to clean the condenser coils. Clean them and hold the up and down arrows together for three seconds. It is one of the most useful things this appliance does.
Do I have to use the manufacturer's filter?
You do not have to, and there is a real difference in this water. A filter that does not fit properly leaks slowly behind the cabinet, which is a considerably more expensive outcome than the filter saved.
Can I just ignore it?
The filter, for a while. The condenser reminder, not in this city — it is the maintenance that keeps the sealed system repair away, and ignoring it is how the high temperature alarm arrives a few months later.
