Symptom

Viking open burner flame uneven or yellow

A flame that is blue on one side and yellow and lazy on the other, or a ring that never quite makes a full circle. On an open burner this is visible, reachable and usually free to correct.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Look at the flame color in a dim kitchen

Blue with a faint inner cone is right. Yellow tips are a mixture or a port problem, and orange flecks are usually dust rather than either.

  2. 02

Compare with the burner next to it

Two burners side by side make the difference obvious in a way one burner alone never does.

  3. 03

    Check the pan bottoms

Sooting means incomplete combustion and it is worth attention rather than tolerance.

  4. 04

    Ask when it started

From new points at gas type or air shutters. Gradually points at ports. Suddenly after a clean points at seating.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Yellow or orange tips on one side”
  • “Part of the ring not lighting at all”
  • “Sooting on the bottom of the pan”

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Viking open burner flame uneven or yellow

The fastest diagnosis is the code

Lift the burner head off and look straight down at the port ring. Anything dried in a port shows, and a stiff brush and a pin clear it. This is the repair that this burner design exists to make possible — you can do it yourself in ten minutes.

Why this make gives you a fighting chance

Almost every rival sealed the cooktop, which put the burner ports where nobody can see or reach them. This maker kept a commercial-type open burner in the home kitchen: the grate lifts off, the bowl lifts out, the head lifts off, and the port ring is right there. That is why a lazy flame here is usually ten minutes with a brush rather than a service call.

What it is telling you

One side lazy is the ports on that side. The whole burner yellow and soft is the air-to-gas mixture or the gas type. Neither is dangerous in the short term, and both cook badly enough to be worth fixing.

Questions about viking open burner flame uneven or yellow

Some yellow is normal, is it not?

A few orange flecks are usually dust burning off and mean nothing. A persistently yellow, lazy flame is not normal on this equipment and it is worth correcting — it soots pans and it cooks worse.

Can I clear the ports myself?

Yes, and this burner was designed so you could. Head off, brush the ring, clear any blocked port with a pin rather than anything that will enlarge it, and put the head back flat.

It has been yellow since we moved in.

Then gas type is worth checking. A range set up for natural gas running on propane, or the reverse, burns wrong from the first day and no amount of cleaning changes it.
